Build-a-Main-Character Workshop

One of the best cures for writers block is to write something not related to your blocked work. This something doesn’t have to be an epic work or an introspective slice of life. Just words on the page. To make it a little easier to slide into that story, here’s a silly way to get started.

First you need one six-sided die. If you play any table-top role playing games, you probably have dice somewhere! And you are familiar with the character sheets used to build your character. This idea is similar but simpler.

We’ll start with a hero. If you write Female/Female romance, you can skip this part and go to the next, just run through it twice. If you write Male/Male, do this part twice and skip the next. If you write poly or any number above 2, do what you will.

Roll the die.

You might be thinking that to have a shape shifter in a story that’s not a paranormal will be difficult, but it might mean that the character is insane. That’s a fun plot twist!

Let’s give it a try. Here’s my results.

Hero has red hair, green eyes, an oval face, but pointed chin. He is husky but muscular, has brown skin, and is Lawful Evil. That’s scary. Our Heroine has short, straight blonde hair. She has brown eyes, a narrow face, wide lips, and she’s very muscular. I bet she lifts! Her skin tone is pale. She’s Neutral Evil. They will be a perfect match.

The story will be contemporary, heat level intense, the setting is any Latin Country (I’m going with Italy, they will both stand out there.) His complication is that he’s allergic to cats. Her complication is that she has to take antidepressants. The plot twist is that one of them is the other’s boss. And the ending will be Happily Ever After! Aw, that’s nice.

This is just a basic idea, you can add any dimensions you feel it needs. Have fun, and share this with your writing friends.
