Introducing RA Winter

Ms. RA Winter and I go way back. Almost six months, maybe a year. She caught my eye on Scribophile when she published her book Little Sparrow: A Kiowa Love Story. I read it quickly and had a great time with it. The best was the character of Grandfather. He captured my heart in his first scene.

RA Winter began her writing career under her married name, writing genealogy books. However, her love for reading romance novels intruded in on her daily activities. She started writing “Little Sparrow” and fell in love with her characters and is writing many more books in the Romantic Western series, ” A Kiowa in Love”. Each one of Grandfather’s grandchildren will have their story told, as will Grandfather himself.

RA spent many years traveling the world and has lived in many different countries. Turkey, Egypt, Germany, and Jordan, have all been called “home” at one time or another. She’s even been employed as a Federal Agent. Now you can find her quietly living in Pittsburgh, Pa, with her husband, writing her next novel about Grandfather and Lilly, a lively story where Lilly’s dead husband’s ghost haunts her, tormenting her at every glance.

FYI… Dingle eats him in the second chapter but can’t keep him down, or out of the spaghetti sauce. Paranormal humor at its best; romance stilted by two opposing forces. An Italian ghost and a Native American spirit come head to head. Who will win? Due out in the fall of 2017.

I asked Ms. Winter to answer a few questions about writing. Here are her replies.

DLH: Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing as far as content?

RAW: Not info-dumping new information about cultures that people don’t understand. It is hard explaining characters reactions when someone doesn’t understand the culture. You can’t just write… Well, it’s because of this or that. You have to weave it in and make it natural.

DLH: What marketing strategies do you find most helpful? Any resources you would recommend to other authors or aspiring authors?

RAW: Get reviews from well-known sites. I like . when I’m doing a promo. and All of those sites are free. has a large following. is a tweet service. is a read and review site. After you read a book, someone reviews yours anonymously. You get a lot of good feedback from them.

DLH: What are you currently working on and what is it about?

RAW: I have a few books in the works. The furthest one along is “A Stiff One for Nona”. It follows Grandfather and Nona as they find love but the ghost of her dead husband is haunting her. He won’t leave her alone and interferes worse than Grandfather. He has something important to tell Nona, but he can’t remember what it is. Nona believes that he will disappear once she finds love so she tries to latch on to Grandfather. Grandfather can’t tell Nona he knows about her dead husband because the ghost is… a mouthy old coot who tells too many secrets about their love life. When she finds out that Grandfather can hear and see her dead husband, she freaks and leaves.

DLH: Whoa, don’t give too much away! Did I mention I love Grandfather? Moving onward. What are your ambitions for your writing career?

RAW: To make people laugh and feel good about themselves and the world around them. There is so much going on in people’s lives these days. They need to regain their laughter and lightheartedness that they had as youths.

DLH: What was the hardest thing about writing your latest book?

RAW: Making it believable. There is this cat, who thinks he’s a dog, who is actually a Native American spirit. His goal is to show our weaknesses and bring humor to our lives. In my latest story, Nona is haunted by her husband’s ghost. I have to rein in my humor. His hands keep slipping up her dress and talking naughty to her! Nona has no idea that Grandfather can see the ghost.

DLH: I love that cat, Dingle! I can’t wait to read this one and find out how Grandfather goes about mending the situation.
